Knee pain is a common complaint that affects people of all ages. It is a common problem with many causes, from acute injuries, age related, to complications of medical conditions. There are complains of limping due to discomfort, difficulty walking, inability to bend or extend the knee, redness and swelling to name a few.

Many types of minor knee pain respond well to self-care measures. Physical therapy and knee braces also can help relieve knee pain. In some cases, however, your knee may require surgical repair.

Knee braces have become a common treatment option for those who suffer from knee pain. These are supports that you wear for a painful or injured knee. Some people use them for acute injuries, chronic conditions and even to prevent knee injuries during sports. However, your Family Doctor will do the assessment regarding the use of these braces in the management of knee pain. The purpose of braces and splints is to improve physical function, slow disease progression, and diminish pain.

When should I wear a knee Brace?
You should wear a knee brace if you are looking to prevent injury, feel any constant mild to moderate pain, knee instability, you are going back to sports and activities after an old injury, and post-surgery.

Do knee braces work?
Braces help some people more than others. Some may find comfort and peace of mind in wearing a knee brace, especially those who suffer from osteoarthritis or chronic pain from a previous injury. However, there is no medical research that says a knee brace is a cure for knee problems, but most Physicians agree that if it helps the symptoms and provides peace of mind, then it is okay. In general, most people who wear knee braces feel that they help. Remember, the need for a brace should be determined by your doctor.

Which brace to choose?
This depends on the level of support needed and/or what your doctor recommends. This decision is based on whether or not you’re recovering from surgery, the type of injury you have, and how much movement your knee should be getting.

How long can I wear it?
The length of time is really personal preference. A general recommendation would be that you wear a brace or support during activity and for an hour or two afterwards. If you feel better wearing it longer, that is fine as well. To work well, a knee brace should be worn during all activities that put you at risk of injury to your knee.

How tight should you wear a knee brace?
If you feel pain, numbness, or tingling in your leg below your knee, your knee brace may be on too tight. Loosen the straps and repeat the two finger test.

How to get a knee brace?
Pharmacies or medical supply stores carry different brands of knee braces. Get your doctor’s advice if you want to try a knee brace.
