Cebu: A Place of Discovery

Cebu: A Place of Discovery

Cebu is a historic province in the Philippines, located in the Central Visayas region, and consists of a main island and 167 surrounding islands. Its capital is Cebu City, the Queen City of the South, the previous and first capital of the Philippines. Thinking about the province itself, it screams of a complex history and historical significance to the country. It is where the Philippines introduced its story. Visiting the beautiful province undoubtedly makes you think about how epic the discovery of our country was. You can see a lot of historic evidence like the different Catholic churches, the shrines and the island itself. Our bayani(s) or heroes have achieved many remarkable things that prove our pagkapilipino. Cebu stays a unique place where you feel proud of yourself as a Filipino because our discovery was here, our story started in Cebu. I was amazed at how the local people of Cebu, especially in Cebu City, properly preserved and are still trying to preserve the historical sights that were there for over hundreds of years. They were capable of maintaining and saving the tracks of history, so that future generations will know where we came from; there is something that we can look back on. Cebu is not just full of history, but it is also a place full of local colors and social happiness. We visited the province after an earthquake that occurred days before we went to Cebu. It was devastating to see what the earthquake had done to the province but the locals remained very welcoming and accommodating even if they had been through a lot. They were remarkably strong and hardworking to be able to stand up for themselves and restart. They were capable of saving the tourist spots and our historical sites. This proves to us that no matter what comes into our lives, we will be able to face them because we are Filipinos and Filipinos are very optimistic and positive. Even their local language and my language, which is Tagalog, was never a barrier between us because we all have a similar story. I love their enlightened attitudes and charismatic personalities. One extraordinary thing that I also loved the most when I was in Cebu was their lechon and other local foods. I mean, being a Filipino means you come from a country that has many authentic traditional foods. I would really love to go back to Cebu because I want to explore it more.
