It was announced earlier this month that Sobeys has a plan in place to remove plastic bags from all their grocery stores in Canada by January 2020. This move will help make a huge difference to our environment not only in terms of reducing waste but also moving towards a greener lifestyle of sustainability. It is important to note that the company will still be providing paper bags but will be pushing for people to bring reusable bags and embrace the movement away from plastic. Moreover, Sobeys will be acquiring other ways to help get rid of plastic in their stores. For example, Sobeys will begin using mesh produce bags in the near future made from recycled water bottles that could be used towards bagging fruits and vegetables. Many people have already been using their reusable bags when grocery shopping for years now, but this move will be towards those who still insist on grabbing a couple plastic bags at the store only to throw them in the garbage later. Little movements like this one made by Sobeys can help many people start to think about their daily habits and make little changes. Examples of these habits include bringing around a metal straw to use for drinks purchased at fast food places or restaurants, turning lights off when not occupying a room/area, walking/biking to our destinations, and reusing water bottles instead of purchasing plastic ones. In doing this, I believe we will help improve the environment around us for many more generations to come.
