Child Benefit supports families most in need

Children’s Services Minister Danielle Larivee is urging parents to file their taxes to be eligible for financial supports, including the Alberta Child Benefit.

Parents can get access to free tax preparation clinics offered to eligible taxpayers year-round by community organizations. Eligible families are automatically enrolled to receive the Alberta Child Benefit and other supports that make their lives better and more affordable.

Alberta Child Benefit payments are mailed or direct deposited by the Canada Revenue Agency in as many as four installments annually. Eligible families will receive their February installment on Feb. 27.

“The Alberta Child Benefit is helping families afford winter clothes or enrol their kids in extra-curricular activities for the first time. We want all eligible families to be able to access this life-changing support. I encourage families across Alberta to find out about free tax preparation clinics in their communities.”

Danielle Larivee, Minister of Children’s Services

“The Alberta Child Benefit is an important and critical poverty reduction policy. It provides families on fixed incomes and working poor across our province with additional dollars to meet their basic needs such as school supplies and more nutritious food and helps to lift families out of poverty. We know that there are families who are not filing their taxes and therefore are not receiving the child benefit. In this context, tax filing is a poverty-reduction activity.”

Franco Savoia, executive director, Vibrant Communities Calgary

Alberta families earning less than $41,746 per year in family net income are eligible to receive the Alberta Child Benefit. The maximum annual benefit is $1,114 for families with one child and up to $2,785 for families with four or more children.
